Library them. Lenin – the most important cultural object of the Russian Federation. In the winter of 1992, it was renamed the State Russian Library, but for many Muscovites and visitors it remains the famous Leninka.

The library is located at: st. Vozdvizhenka, 3/5, near the Kremlin and Alexander Garden.

History of the founding of the library

The main building of the library was built in the Soviet years according to the design of V. Gelfreich and A. Shchuko in the style of Soviet monumentalism combined with neoclassicism.
 
The Pashkov House was erected in the 18th century in the style of classicism, subsequently rebuilt many times. Since 1861, it housed the Rumyantsev Museum. Rare manuscripts, maps, drawing books (atlases), paintings, collections of minerals were kept in its halls. In the 20s. In the twentieth century, all non-book exhibits were transferred to other museums. In 1925, the Library of the USSR named after A.I. Lenin.

Library collections

The volume of all funds of the main library of the country exceeds 48.1 million items. These are not only books, but also valuable documents, manuscripts, newspapers and magazines, albums, maps, notes, sound and video recordings (phonograph records, magnetic tapes, audio and video cassettes, CD, MP3), optical compact discs.

All storage units are located on 19 floors-tiers. The most valuable publications are stored on the topmost of them: the collections of P. Ya. Chaadaev, the personal library of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, etc. The windows of the upper tier offer magnificent views of the Kremlin and Moscow.

The rare book department is of the greatest interest. It contains a collection of poems by A. Blok with his signature, a work by L. N. Tolstoy, which he presented to his aunt.

In the section of the military book you can read the oath of the tsarist army. It is written in different versions, taking into account the religion of the soldier.

How readers get books

The delivery of books and other items of storage is carried out using unique technical devices. Readers' requests are placed in special cases, they are sent upstairs with the help of pneumatic mail. Selected books, magazines and other orders are lowered to the 2nd tier by a conveyor, from there they get onto a chain conveyor and delivered to the reading rooms.

How to visit Leninka

You can enter the library as part of a tour group. Tours are organized by various companies in Moscow and the excursion bureau of the RSL.

Citizens of the Russian Federation and other states from the age of 14 can enroll in the library. This requires: passport, 100 rubles. on a photo for a library card, a student card (for students) or a document on education.
