Church of the Holy Prince Igor of Chernigov

Church of the Holy Prince Igor of Chernigov

The Church of St. Igor of Chernigov is located in the village of Peredelkino in Moscow. The author of the project is the Russian architect Alexander Shipkov. The temple was erected in honor of the Holy Prince Igor of Chernigov. The monument to him and St. Philip are installed directly in front of the building. They are a symbol of the unity of the Russian spirit and remind of the tragic events in the history of the country.

The history of the appearance of the temple and its development

The first mention of the church, which originally existed as a temple of the Transfiguration, appeared in the 17th century. During the years of the French attack, many buildings were burned. But the temple in Peredelkino was saved for unknown reasons. Rector John Yakovlev managed to hide valuable relics of the church underground.

In 1815, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior was erected. Until our time, the iconostasis of the 18th century, the royal gates, and unique wall paintings have been preserved from it. Several attempts were made to close the temple, but this was never done. In 1952 it became the residence of the Patriarch of All Russia. This was the reason for the active development of the temple and the infrastructure of Peredelkino. On the territory of the temple lives the personal confessor of Patriarch Kirill — Schema-Archimandrite Eli.

The most valuable icon is the Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands. It was donated to the temple by Patriarch Alexy I. Once the icon belonged to the Dolgorukov family.

Next to the temple there is a cemetery where famous writers and clergymen, including Boris Pasternak, are buried. A new temple in the name of Prince Igor of Chernigov and Kyiv was built after 2005 with the active filing of Patriarch Alexy II. He himself repeated the project and chose the places for the construction of the object. Today, the temple pleases hundreds of parishioners every day, is a place of worship and meetings of believers from all over the world.

A distinctive feature of the temple in Peredelkino is a snow-white iconostasis with beautiful gilding, which blends perfectly with the images. Each internal detail seems to be part of one big composition. The sectoral division of the walls further emphasizes the whiteness of the interior. The temple can accommodate 1200 parishioners. The height of the central dome of the church reaches 10 meters. Adjacent to it is a park and garden ensemble with an obelisk, which was dedicated to the boyars Kolychev. The domes are made in different colors that blend harmoniously with each other.

The temple is open to parishioners daily from 07:00 to 20:00. A priest is always present in the church during the day. Services are held daily.
