Pashkov House: the most elegant building in the center of Moscow

Pashkov House: the most elegant building in the center of Moscow

The Pashkov House, located on Vozdvizhenka, is a masterpiece of architecture. The building in the style of classicism was commissioned by the famous Pyotr Pashkov. A beautiful monumental building in white with columns and a green roof is decorated with stucco and statues. Light, but at the same time luxurious in appearance, the house seems to rise against the background of other nearby buildings. The Pashkov House is not only a cult celebrity of the capital, but also a place with a rich history.

Time of occurrence

In 1784-1786, the famous house was built by order of the son of a batman Peter I, who was a lieutenant of the Life Guards. There is an opinion that Vasily Bazhenov himself worked on the project of creating the famous building, but there is no documentary evidence of this. However, many historians and cultural workers see in this building a typical Bazhenov style.

History of Creation

Pashkov carefully chose a suitable place for construction and did not fail, since the famous Borovitsky Hill and the Kremlin are located in the neighborhood. This house at one time became the first secular place in the history of Moscow. Pashkov's house is designed in such a way that it seems to be a single whole with Vagankovsky Hill.
Pashkov's estate was badly damaged during the war with the French. It was restored in 1815-1816 and acquired completely different features. The house became a typical object of Moscow classicism of that time.
In 1862, the collections of the Rumyantsev Museum were placed in the Pashkov House. At the same time, the library and the collection of handwritten printed books of Nikolai Petrovich Rumyansky were transferred to his chambers. It was this event that became the harbinger of the creation of the Russian State Library. The famous price of the famous philanthropist and artist is carved above the entrance to the Pashkov house.

During the revolutionary years and during the Great Patriotic War, the facade of the estate and its interior decoration were badly damaged. They were restored at the end of the 20th century.

Distinguishing Features

The main features of the Pashkov House are not only its external features. However, there is definitely no second such building in Moscow. The facade of the Pashkov House is a unique classicism that has been preserved today only in a few buildings, each of which is individual in its own way. The large hall with gilding and stucco was once used for balls and solemn ceremonies. Reading rooms, in the amount of three rooms, also function and can please their visitors not only with unique editions and manuscripts, but also with interior decoration in the spirit of classicism.

Pashkov House today

Today, the Pashkov House has three library halls open to visitors. The Great Hall, as in the 18th century, is used for its intended purpose. It hosts award ceremonies, balls, exhibitions and vernissages.
