Savvinskoye Compound

Savvinskoye Compound in Moscow: what do you need to know about it?

Many interesting tourist places are hidden in the center of Moscow, which amaze with their architectural solutions, history of origin and exciting secrets. Savvinskoye Compound is located near Tverskaya Street. You just need to turn into the arch, and you will understand the charm of the neo-Russian style with elements of modern and baroque.

History of the Savva Compound

The architect of the Savvinsky Compound was Ivan Sergeevich Kuznetsov. The project was completed in 1907, and then the building belonged to the Savva-Storozhevsky Monastery. It became the largest non-residential building between Tverskaya Square and Okhotny Ryad. The main entrance, facing Tverskaya Street, was advantageously distinguished by Art Nouveau elements. In different years, this building housed the firm of Alexander Khanzhonkov, the editorial office of the journal "Emotional Reading".

It is interesting that when creating his masterpiece, the architect was looking for inspiration in the tiles of Abramtsev near Moscow. A feature of the building was the combination of a facade of multi-colored, ceramic tiles and strict lines. This is one of the most successful projects of the national romantic trend in Russian modernity. We see how the architect unleashed the potential of ancient Russian traditions, but with the use of modern materials and trends in decorative design at that time.

Now the Savvinskoye Compound is an object of cultural heritage of federal significance. When the reconstruction took place in 1938-1940, many buildings near Tverskaya Street were subject to demolition. However, it was decided to transfer the Savvinskoye Compound to a new foundation, moving it deeper into the quarter. So, without evicting the tenants, the building was moved in a few hours on the night of November 4, 1939. Unfortunately, for this reason, the architectural monument was completely closed by the Stalinist houses of Tverskaya 6, the building of the Moscow Art Theater and other modern buildings. You can find the Savvinskoye Compound, enter the patio and enjoy the unique atmosphere. Address Tverskaya d.6 – admission is free.

Architectural pearl of Moscow

Probably you have seen photos of the old Tverskaya street more than once. However, now the area of the Garden Ring has completely changed. And if you dreamed of immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, then be sure to come to the Savvinskoye Compound. Pointed turrets, a tower roof, rows of large semicircular windows, patterns from many tiles and multi-colored tiles with flowers, fabulous birds. In the courtyard you will find stair-cases like in European palaces. The window panes seem to shine in the morning sunlight. All this is pleasing to the eye and uplifting! This is the beauty of Savvino-Storozhevsky Compound.
