Russian Forest Museum

Russian Forest Museum

One of the national treasures of Russia – these are her forests. They occupy almost half of the country's territory. For their conservation and rational use of natural resources, it is necessary to disseminate information about the principles of forestry and instill the idea of caring for the "lungs of the planet". In 1998, in order to achieve these goals, the Government of the Russian Federation established the Russian Forest Museum in Moscow.

Painfully collected and regularly replenished funds of the museum contain more than 19,000 exhibits. Among them there are scientific works and private materials of such famous specialists in forestry as A.V. Tyurin, I.S. Melekhov, L.E. Yakimansky. Unique collections are also stored here, the most remarkable of which are – these are 876 samples of wood and 22 cuts of trees collected from the area where the Tunguska meteorite fell. And thanks to the artist E.I. Kuleshov, the museum acquired a realistic natural atmosphere, allowing you to feel the life of forests.

The main exhibition is organized on the basis of the historical stages of development of the domestic forestry and includes the following expositions:

  • "Temple of the Forest" – an example of a typical forest area with its characteristic flora and fauna, realistically recreated in the museum premises;
  • "Rus wooden" – the interior of a peasant hut, as well as household items made of wood and tools used in the past;
  • "The Sovereign's Eye" – information materials about the national history of forestry management;
  • "Gifts of the Forest" — an exhibition dedicated to edible and healing plants;
  • "Rings of Time" — an exhibition that tells about the method of determining the age of trees by rings, as well as their evolution;
  • "Forest inventory";
  • "Reforestation";
  • "Forest protection".

For visitors to the museum, there is an opportunity to view the expositions both on general and thematic excursions. Events dedicated to memorable dates are regularly held, where you can participate in master classes and attend lectures. On three floors of the museum there are not only exhibits, but also a cinema hall.

The museum is located within the Garden Ring, next to the Paveletskaya metro station. There is also a permanent exhibition, under which a previously burnt old mansion was specially restored.
