House of the Government of the Russian Federation

House of the Government of the Russian Federation

The House of the Government of the Russian Federation or the White House is one of the most famous sights in Moscow. The building is overgrown with legends in connection with the events that took place within its walls. The White House is located on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment and runs along the Moskva River

Construction and popularity

The construction of the monumental structure was marked by the beginning of the sixties. The design of the building was entrusted to a group of craftsmen, among whom Dmitry Chechulin was appointed the main one.

The first plan of the house was created after work on the Stalin skyscrapers was completed.

The construction was completed in the 1980s, but despite this the building looks dated. The Government House turned out to be quite large, so it was decided to place various State administrations and structures in it.

The hallmark of the building was the central clock tower on the central part of the house. Later it was replaced by a bronze eagle.

Indeed, a seven-story building, a 20-story tower delight not only guests, but also residents of the city. The state symbols of the Russian Federation are located on the clock tower: the flag, the coat of arms.

The outside of the building is lined with white marble, and there are bas-reliefs on the walls. The main staircase accompanies visitors up to the embankment. Unfortunately, now the territory of the White House is surrounded by a fence. But initially, the territory of the building was supposed to become a park area for everyone, but since 1994, the townspeople can no longer visit it.

Historical background

The House of the Government of the Russian Federation, and this is not only a beautiful and monumental building. He is known to many compatriots for the events that took place in 1991, when supporters of the Soviet Union barricaded themselves in their offices, trying to maintain the old way of life. Residents of the city and supporters of the first president of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin, took up arms against them on the street. Historians will give the name "August Putsch" to these events.

The troops, controlled by the supporters of the USSR, were sent to suppress the rebellion, but, fortunately or unfortunately, they did not succeed. Gradually, the supporters of the USSR began to go over to the side of the new government. Then Boris Yeltsin made his famous speech on the tank, and this was the end of the coup.
There was another important event in 1993, which led to significant losses. Then 12 tank charges were fired at the White House, as a result of which the building began to burn. The upper floors were badly damaged.

Soon the government decided to completely restore the White House.

Now the building of the government of the Russian Federation is a visiting card of Moscow. Despite the fact that more concise buildings are in fashion now, the White House fits perfectly into the image of a modern metropolis.
