Garden Ring road
The third ring in Moscow, called the ring "B", was built almost two centuries ago. It differs from others not only in size, but also in its rich history.
The emergence of the Garden Ring
The modern Garden Ring originated at the site of fences, which were built in the 16th century on the orders of Boris Godunov. They were located on the outskirts of the city at that time, and were intended to protect the capital from the raids of the Crimean Tatars. The fence consisted of oak walls, ground oxen and a moat along the perimeter. For that time it was a fairly reliable structure.
Over time, such protection lost its relevance, turned into a kind of customs, and later - into a market with retail space.
In 1812, during the great fire in Moscow, the remains of oak walls were completely destroyed.
After the destruction of Moscow for many years restored. Ditches were buried, in their place there were greenery. So the Garden Ring got its name and gradually acquired modern features. In these places a lot of city holidays and folk festivals were held.
By the end of the 19th century, along the ring stretched transport routes, the route was called “B”, and the people called it “bug.”
In the first half of the 20th century, the area was asphalted, the Crimean and Krasnokholmsky bridges were erected. Around the 1950s, underground passages, overpasses and various interchanges began to appear.
sights
Over time, the gloomy view of the Garden Ring was eliminated by various buildings. Today it is a lively cultural part of the city, where you can see a lot of things for both residents and guests of the capital.
Mikhail Bulgakov’s apartment, which is currently a museum, is located on Bolshaya Sadovaya Street.
There is also the Academic Theater of Satire, located on Triumph Square. His story dates back to 1924, when the political elite were still making fun of the underground, as well as creating social sketches. One of the most famous performances of the mid-20th century was Terkin in the Next World.
The streets themselves within the rings are quite picturesque and walking along them is a real pleasure.
One of the most popular Garden Ring hotels is also located here, next to Prospect Mira. It has a very interesting architecture, which is why it is so in demand among the guests of the capital.
The Triumphal Square is also famous here, which gives rise to the shortest street - Sadovaya-Triumfalnaya.
The puppet theater is located on Sadovaya-Samotechnaya. It is notable for its façade - it houses a clock with heroes of famous fairy tales.
The tower on Sadovaya-Sukharevskaya, built in the 17th century, originated on the site of the Sretensky Gate. It divides the area and the street into 2 parts - Bolshaya and Malaya Sukharevskaya.
The first stage of the Koltsevaya metro line passes along the Garden Ring, therefore it is easy to move on it.
The modern Garden Ring did not preserve those green spaces in whose honor it was named. It is not as quiet and cozy as the Boulevard, but, nevertheless, it is the hallmark and one of the important historical places of Moscow.
