Architectural masterpieces of Zaryadye Park

Architectural masterpieces of Zaryadye Park

The historical district of the capital, Zaryadye, became popular among the residents of the city after a modern panoramic park was opened here on the site of the Rossiya hotel complex. After the hotel was demolished in 2006, the ancient buildings and temples ceased to be dissonant with high-rise buildings and again captured the attention of residents and guests of the capital.
Most of the temples of the park are built on Varvarka Street. From 1933 to 1990, it had a different name and was referred to as the street of Stepan Razin, who commanded the uprising of 1670.

Znamensky Cathedral

The most unique and famous temple of Zaryadye – Znamensky Cathedral with five domes, built on the site of a former monastery. The cathedral composition includes ancient cells, a hipped bell tower, the Fraternal Corps, as well as the Refectory. The cathedral was built by the forces of Kostroma serfs from bricks in the period from 1679 to 1689. The construction was headed by F. Grigoriev and G. Anisimov. Galleries of two tiers are attached to the majestic building from the northern and western sides. The Znamensky Monastery was founded in 1631 by Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov in the name of the "Sign" icon. with the image of the face of the Mother of God.

Church of the Great Martyr Barbara

Varvarka Street can rightly be called a real encyclopedia of Moscow architecture. Here you can find the best examples of architecture from different historical periods. The name of the street was due to the church located on it, named after the Great Martyr Barbara. The building was erected in 1554 by A. Novy.

The church was repeatedly subjected to changes in its appearance and was again rebuilt by R. Kazakov in the period from 1796 to 1804. It is a building built in a classical style. The temple with one dome was set on a high base and decorated with graceful porticos. The modern look of the church was betrayed during restoration work in 1965-1967, when the territory surrounding the Rossiya Hotel was ennobled.

The Chambers of the Romanovs

Varvarka rises 13 meters above the Moskva River, for this reason only roofs can be seen near low buildings, such as, for example, at the Romanovs' chambers. They now contain a collection of antiquities of the State Historical Museum, which were used in everyday life by residents of the patriarchal capital.

Only the chambers have survived from the Romanov estate to this day. They have been rebuilt and restored many times. The first time they were reconstructed after a fire in Moscow in 1668. Then they were repaired at the direction of Elizabeth Petrovna in 1737 after another fire. The chambers miraculously survived after the war of 1812 and were repaired by order of Archbishop Filaret in 1821. The chambers underwent the most global restoration work on the 250th anniversary of the reign of the Romanov dynasty. Then F. Richter became the author of the repair project.

Temple of Maxim the Blessed

Near the Romanov's chambers stands a temple with one dome, named after Maximus the Blessed. It was founded in the period from 1698 to 1699, and the bell tower was added to it only in 1827. Since 1994, church services have been resumed in the temple.

Church of George the Victorious

The very first church that welcomes guests of Varvarka – Temple of George the Victorious. The building was built in 1657, and the bell tower was added to the church in 1818. As in St. Basil's Cathedral, church services have been held here again since 1995.

Church of the Conception of Anna

On the southwestern side of the park is the Church of the Conception of Anna. It was first mentioned in chronicles describing the fire of 1493. The building acquired its modern appearance in 1950 after restoration work led by the famous Leo David.

Soaring Bridge

An unusual panorama of the temples opens from the bridge, which has the name – Soaring and towering over the Moscow River and its embankment by 15 meters. The floating bridge is considered one of the unique viewing platforms of the capital. From it you can see not only Zaryadye, but also the Kremlin, a high-rise building located on Kotelnicheskaya, and also see the beauties of the Moscow River.

Ice cave

In second place after the famous Soaring Bridge is the Ice Cave. It is also located in Zaryadye Park, and the temperature inside it does not exceed -9 degrees even in summer. An average of 70 tons of frozen water was used to equip the cave.

Zaryadye Park – the largest architectural project in Moscow. This is the first public park that reaches such a size in terms of its territorial scale.
