Fili Park: a green oasis in the heart of Moscow https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/park-fili

Fili Park: a green oasis in the heart of Moscow

Fili Park: a green oasis in the heart of Moscow

Fili Park, located in the west of Moscow, is considered one of the largest and most beautiful parks in the city. Today this park is a favorite vacation spot for residents of Moscow and guests of the capital, but its history goes back more than a hundred years.

History of Fili Park

Fili Park was created at the beginning of the 20th century on the site of the former estate of the merchant M.I. Raevsky. Since 1906, the property became the property of the banker M.I. Goldenberg, who made significant efforts to turn this place into a real park. The banker ordered a project from the famous landscape architect Leonardo Marconi and began to actively improve the territory.

Over time, not only green spaces appeared in the park, but also streams, ponds, bridges and benches. The banker purchased several statues and fountains to decorate the park. All this created a unique atmosphere of solitude and tranquility, which was so appreciated by the inhabitants of Moscow.

However, in 1917 the Revolution and the Civil War threatened the existence of the park. Military barracks and warehouses were placed on its territory, and some buildings were destroyed. Nevertheless, thanks to the efforts of the Parisian architect A. Francois, the park was restored and even expanded.

In the period after the Second World War, Fili Park became one of the favorite places for Moscow residents for walking and outdoor recreation. In 1980, events were held here as part of the Olympic Games, and several sports facilities were installed in the park, which are still used by athletes.

Description of Fili Park

Today, Fili Park covers an area of about 300 hectares and consists of several zones with different natural environments and architectural monuments. Its main part – central – located between the streets of Kutuzovsky Prospekt and Filippovsky Lane. There is a lake and the Filevka River, as well as numerous attractions for children and adults.

Lake of Fili Park – this is a real pearl that attracts tourists with its beauty and comfort. On its banks there are cafes where you can drink a cup of coffee or have a delicious lunch. There are walking paths around the lake, where you can walk at any time of the year and enjoy the surrounding nature.

Fili Park is also famous for its architectural monuments. Here you can see ancient estates that were built in the 18th century. One of them – Rogozin's estate – today it is a museum where you can learn about the life and work of the famous Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, who often visited this house during his trips to Moscow.

Another interesting place in Fili Park is the botanical garden, which was created here in 1945. The garden covers an area of more than 10 hectares and has more than 5 thousand species of plants, including exotic and rare ones.

In Fili Park you can also watch animals and birds. More than 100 species of birds live here, as well as other animals such as squirrels, foxes, badgers and others. For children there is a small zoo where they can see different animals and even feed them.

In addition, various events and concerts are constantly held in Fili Park. In summer, you can listen to live music on various stages, and in winter – go ice skating at the rink, which is located in the center of the park.

For lovers of outdoor activities in Fili Park there are many different sports grounds and exercise equipment. Here you can play football, basketball, volleyball, tennis and other sports. In addition, the park has specially equipped bike paths where you can ride a bike or rollerblade.

Fili Park is also a popular place for picnics and barbecues. On the territory of the park there are many places where you can have a picnic, as well as specially equipped barbecue grills for frying shish kebabs and other outdoor dishes.

One of the main advantages of Fili Park is its convenient location. It is located in the city center and is easily accessible both by car and public transport. Near the park there are many cafes, restaurants and shops where you can spend time after a walk in the park.

In conclusion, Fili Park – this is a great place for recreation and entertainment in Moscow. Here you can enjoy the beauties of nature, get acquainted with the history of the city, go in for sports and spend time with family or friends. Fili Park is open all year round and is always ready to welcome guests from all over the world.

Sheremetev's hospitable house is the pride of ancient Moscow

Sheremetev's hospitable house is the pride of ancient Moscow

Hospital home of Count N.P. Sheremetev – one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. Cozyly located on Bolshaya Sukharevskaya Square, the building immediately attracts attention with its palace style, which has survived to our time almost in its original form.

The architecture of the Hospice House is based on elements of classicism, unique in their beauty. Initially, the landmark project was developed by the Russian architect Nazarov, but the lion's share of the design and construction of the building was carried out by the Italian master Quarenghi, who had previously had a hand in the construction of several stunningly beautiful buildings in Peterhof and St. Petersburg. It was thanks to Quarenghi that the Hospice House gained its monumentality.

The hospice house has a semicircular shape, forming a colossal front yard. In the center of the courtyard, tourists can see the beautiful dome of the Trinity Church, in front of which there is a small portico, elegantly decorated with an unusual-looking Doric colonnade.

Architects decorated the front facade of the house with stylish old stucco. There are also four figures of evangelists, which are framed by texts consisting of Masonic symbols – Count Sheremetiev was considered one of the most famous members of the Russian lodge.

Quarenghi worked hard on the interior of the house – especially for interior decoration, he ordered Ural stone and high-quality marble. Even after many years, we can admire the wonderful staircases and chandeliers, the design of which, together with Quarenghi, was done by the artist D. Scotti, famous for his original approach to fine art.

Experienced guides say that if you carefully study the painting of the Trinity Church, you can find on it a portrait of Praskovya Zhemchugova – the artist captured her image in the form of a cherub.

In the 2000s, the Sheremetev Hospice House, which many now call the Sheremetev Hospital, underwent a major reconstruction. The restorers were able to almost completely restore the murals to their original appearance, as well as restore the iconostasis located in the temple – in this they were helped by photographs preserved from ancient times. Work continued for quite a long time – from 2000 to 2006

Dozens of tourists visit the Hospice House, which immortalized the proud memory of  Count Sheremetev, every day. However, this is not surprising – this unique place really deserves attention!

Architectural masterpiece by Lev Kekushev https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/arkhitekturnyy-shedevr-lva-kekusheva

Architectural masterpiece by Lev Kekushev

Architectural masterpiece by Lev Kekushev

Not far from the Old Arbat is the mansion of List – building, which is considered the architectural heritage of Russia. The house once belonged to Otto List and later, having changed several owners, retained the name of the first owner-entrepreneur.

Amazing mansion

The author of this architectural masterpiece – Lev Kekushev, nicknamed the progenitor of the capital's Art Nouveau. The mansion in Glazovsky Lane was conceived by Kekushev as a house that would belong to him and his family. The construction was marked by the laying of the first stone in 1898, and in less than a year it was completed. In addition to the building, sheds, living quarters for servants and a stable were built in the yard.

The cladding of the house was made using Borovichi bricks, and Tarusa marble was used for decorative finishing. The building is equipped with a corner balcony and decoration in the form of a mosaic picture, which depicts an amazing underwater world. The author of this panel – W. Walcot.

Square of the mansion – 391 sq.m. The architect placed the living quarters near the main staircase, while the basement was occupied by a boiler room, rooms for staff, a kitchen, and a cellar. On the first floor, according to Kekushev's idea, they arranged a living room, a personal office, a buffet and a dining room. On the second floor – apartments for visitors, servants and a balcony.

From the inside, the house was finished quite richly: thanks to the expensive materials used for decoration, the cost of the mansion increased several times. Kekushev began to receive interesting requests for the sale. At that time, Otto List offered the largest sum for the mansion. He paid 20,000 rubles for the plot alone, not to mention the amount for the building, which at that time was estimated at 100,000 rubles.

An interesting fact: the mansion was built by Lev Kekushev, named after the buyer – Otto Liszt, but gained fame and became the capital's center of artistic and musical creativity during the reign of his new owners – Natalia Koussevitskaya and her husband, conductor Sergei Koussevitzky.

End of a cultural era

The golden era of the mansion was interrupted with the outbreak of the First World War. The Koussevitzkys could no longer support their home, so they had to move to a more modest dwelling. The mansion was sold to the industrialist Alexei Meshchersky, who did not live there for long. In 1918 he was arrested, and after his release he left Russia forever. Until 1919, servants of the Meshcherskys lived here.
A little later, the architectural structure was nationalized, now a library was located within its walls, and the name of the mansion was constantly changing. It was only in 1992 that the building was recognized as an object of cultural heritage at the federal level.

Architectural masterpiece today

Today, anyone can admire the famous building from the outside. It is almost impossible to get inside the building, as it houses an institution of government agencies. Access to the territory is also closed. However, you can enjoy the view from the opposite side of the street. From there, amazing decorations of window openings, a corner of the mansion and a mosaic panel with the underwater world open up.

St. Andrew's Anglican Church https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/anglikanskaya-tserkov-sv-andreya

St. Andrew's Anglican Church

St. Andrew's Anglican Church

Anglican Temple – object of cultural heritage of regional significance. The religious building is located in the center of Moscow on Voznesensky Lane in close proximity to the city estate of Sumarokov-Golitsyn. For tourists, the architectural monument is of interest in terms of unique building solutions, interior design, and the study of national culture. At the same time, services are held in the church in English every Thursday and Sunday.

History of St. Andrew's Anglican Cathedral from its founding to the present

The construction of the temple was carried out from 1882 to 1884 with donations from parishioners and patrons. The project of the British architect R.N. Freeman. It was supposed to erect a typical English church in the Victorian style. In the first days of September 1884, the temple was opened for believers.

In the 20s of the XX century, the church was converted into a residential building with isolated rooms, and later transferred to the use of the Melodiya state organization for recording phonograms. If living in a cathedral was uncomfortable, then the room was perfect for sound recording. This was facilitated by the unique design of the wooden ceiling. The reflected sound waves created powerful acoustics inside the building.

In 1994, St. Andrew's Church was returned to the British religious community. In addition to worship, the church houses: a Sunday school, a library, and an educational center. Various events are regularly held: chants, organ concerts, charity evenings.

Church architecture

The building of the cathedral has an elongated rectangular shape with a square red brick tower adjacent to the side, decorated with four decorative turrets on top. The high engineering structure has never been used as a bell tower, it houses various office premises: a library, an archive, etc.

The main entrance to the church on both sides is decorated with terracotta figurines of angels holding a thistle flower – traditional symbol of Scotland. The interior of the temple has a fairly ascetic interior. Brick walls are decorated with illustrations on biblical themes, chairs for parishioners are placed in the prayer hall. The unique design of the vaulted ceiling, made of carved wood, deserves special attention.

It will be interesting for both adults and children to visit the architectural monument. You can do this on your own or as part of an excursion group.

State Museum of Architecture. A.V. Shchusev

In our country, architecture began to develop when the words "Russia" was not there yet. Architectural traditions changed one after another. What were they like?

The cultural institution (its main part is located on Vozdvizhenka, 5) was named after the architect Shchusev. Now it represents objects in several places in the city of Moscow.

Who is Shchusev?

House-Museum of V. M. Vasnetsov https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/dom-muzey-vasnetsova

House-Museum of V. M. Vasnetsov

House-Museum of V. M. Vasnetsov

In a quiet lane in the center of Moscow, there is a two-story wooden house that looks like a fairy-tale tower. Muscovites call it that - teremok. Here is the House-Museum of the famous Russian painter Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov.

History of the museum

The building was erected in 1893-1894 according to drawings and sketches created by the artist himself. In this mansion, V.M. Vasnetsov lived with his family in 1894-1926. The building is considered a brilliant example of the neo-Russian style. The project of the house combined the techniques of Art Nouveau, which was emerging in those years, with elements of ancient Russian architecture. This architectural structure embodied the master's ideas about beautiful and harmonious housing.

The founding date of the museum is considered to be 1927, when after the death of V.M. Vasnetsov, a permanent exhibition of 212 exhibits, organized by his family, began working in the house. For another quarter of a century, the painter's relatives lived in the mansion, carefully preserving his artistic heritage. In the summer of 1953, the official opening of the V.M. Vasnetsov. A year later, 3rd Troitsky Lane, where the mansion is located, was renamed Vasnetsov Lane. In 1986, the house-museum became part of the Tretyakov Gallery.

Museum exhibition

Since the founding of the V.M. Vasnetsov's exposition has increased to 25 thousand items, including:

portraits of family members made by Viktor Mikhailovich;
icons and national costumes from the master's collection;
furniture created according to the sketches of V.M. Vasnetsova and E.D. Polenova;
painting, graphics, sketches of the artist and his colleagues;
household items and works of arts and crafts;
authentic letters, photographs and other documents;
Vasnetsov's personal library, many books from which are autographed by writers, architects and painters who worked at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries.

The exhibits introduce museum visitors to the life of an outstanding artist and allow them to experience the versatility of his work, based on national traditions. The architecture, internal layout and partly the interiors of the building have survived to this day in their original form. They convey the atmosphere of the mansion created by Viktor Mikhailovich for himself and his family.

The second floor of the house was reserved for an art workshop, where the painter created famous canvases inspired by the images of Russian folklore. Today, here you can see paintings from the series “Poem of Seven Fairy Tales”, including “Flying Carpet”, "The Frog Princess" and other works. The atmosphere of the workshop has been preserved in the form it was during the life of the artist.

Tourist place of Moscow - Eliseevsky shop

Tourist place of Moscow - Eliseevsky shop

Everyone who comes to Moscow for the first time definitely wants to visit Red Square and see the large GUM shopping mall. However, there is another amazing store with an incredible history in the capital of Russia. On the corner of Tverskaya Street and Kozitsky Lane there is a grocery store "Eliseevsky". It was opened in 1901, becoming the center of social life of all the capital's residents. Exotic products, rare wines, sweets and more. This grocery store has existed for 120 years. And unfortunately, it was closed in 2021 for an indefinite period.

Back to news »

What makes Eliseevsky grocery store amazing?

Despite the fact that the store was opened in 1901, its history as Deli No. 1 began in the 1920s. In Soviet times, this place was considered the best for shopping. The store had a huge assortment of goods, and with rare products. And by the 1980s, "Eliseevsky" became a real complex with a commercial department. During this period, many Soviet citizens first learned about Gastronome No. 1. The reason was the so-called "Eliseevsky case". A group of store employees were accused of corruption, and director Sokolov was shot by an official court decision.

However, surprisingly, the Eliseevsky store was not closed. And after the collapse of the Soviet Union, after the difficult 1990s and 2000s, it became a place where people come in search of something unusual, rare and exotic. It should be noted that the grocery store was privatized in 1992. After that, the shares of the legal entity were owned by different entrepreneurs. The first restoration of the historic building (inside and outside) was carried out in 2003. Thus, the Soviet Gastronome No. 1 has become a modern supermarket, but retaining a number of its unique features. From 2005 to 2021, the retail operator of the Eliseevsky store there was a trade network "Scarlet Sails". Now there are many rumors about the opening of the complex, but there is no exact information.

We should also mention the amazing house in which the Eliseevsky store is located. This is a real decoration of Tverskaya Street. For more than 230 years, the architectural monument of the eighteenth century has pleased all Muscovites and guests of the capital. From this house, Maria Volkonskaya (the wife of the Decembrist) was escorted to Siberia, but he was remembered as the best and most foreign grocery store in Moscow. For 100 years, people from all over the country have come here in search of scarce products, as well as to see the incredible interiors of the store live. The interior space is divided into several zones with different design. There is no minimalism to which we are all accustomed. On the contrary, the interiors, as if descended from paintings or sketches of great designers. The building will remain intact as the Moscow government has announced its intention to keep the store under city ownership.

Kamergersky lane https://ruroom.net/en/articles/device_moscow/kamergerskiy-pereulok

Kamergersky lane

Kamergersky lane

Kamergersky Lane in Moscow – one of the favorite places for walking, which is popular among the guests of the city and the residents of the capital of Russia themselves. Despite its short length (only 250 meters), this attraction boasts a rich history and numerous mysteries that shroud the origin of the name.

History of Appearance

A short street appeared in the 16th century. The lane began to attract the attention of the townspeople after the construction of the convent. The monastery, unfortunately, has not survived to our times, as it was destroyed by fire in 1812. Despite this, dilapidated monastic buildings flaunt here to this day.

The history of Kamergersky lane is connected with Ivan the Terrible. According to historical data, it was here that the yard of the Sobakins, who were relatives of Marfa Vasilievna (the third wife of Ivan Vasilyevich), was located. Later, these lands passed into the possession of the Streshnevs. The tribal family set up a beautiful garden with fruit trees in the corner of the alley.

Gradually, the appearance of the city changed, as did the famous lane itself. It was owned by the princes Dolgorukovs. During this period there was a princely stable and a monastery cemetery. And this is with a lane width of only 7 meters.

Many people visit Kamergersky Lane to see where they once lived:

  • writers Odoevsky, Tolstoy, Kassil and other writers;
  • actors Kachalov, Khmelev, Sholokhov and other figures of the film industry of the USSR;
  • composer Prokofiev;
  • artist Tropinin.

Now this place is considered the cultural heritage of the country. It is here that you can admire the buildings that were built according to the designs of the most famous architects – Shekhtel, Chichagov, Yuditsky, Freidenberg. And these once simple houses of an elite street were inhabited by famous personalities.

Interesting facts

The rich historical heritage of the street, overflowing with architectural monuments of the past, is difficult to fit into a few pages. But it is simply impossible to mention these interesting facts related to the Moscow landmark. Here are some of them:

  1. The street was considered theatrical until the middle of the 20th century, as artists lived here.
  2. Local buildings offer an excellent view of the Moscow Art Theater Museum and the Sergei Prokofiev Museum, which is open to the public.
  3. In the 1920s, the Tenth Muza cafe was located here, which became a favorite place for Mayakovsky, Bryusov, Yesenin and other writers.
  4. After the reconstruction of Moscow, the lane could become part of the Central Semicircle, but the project was changed.
  5. The lane is open to pedestrians only – Driving here has been strictly prohibited since 1998.
  6. It is here that the oldest bookstore "The House of Pedagogical Books" still operates today.

Having been here once, not a single tourist will be able to forget the beauty and originality of the remarkable buildings – Tolmacheva's apartment building, Odoevsky's estate, the electric theater, the house of the writers' cooperative, the Chevalier hotel and restaurant.

Kuznetsky bridge in Moscow https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/kuznetskiy-most-v-moskve

Kuznetsky bridge in Moscow

Kuznetsky bridge in Moscow

Kuznetsky Most – the oldest technical building in Moscow, whose history begins in the 15th century. Initially, a wooden single-span bridge was thrown across the Neglinka River. With the development of urban infrastructure, it was decided to rebuild it. The construction of a white-stone engineering structure with three arched spans, decorative vases and parapets adjacent to the ramps began in 1754 and lasted 7 years. The project of the architect D.V. Ukhtomsky. With a total length of the bridge of 88.5 m, its width reached 16 m. Located in the shopping center of Moscow, the arch bridge fully met the needs of the townspeople and the architectural style of its time.

Appearance of Kuznetsky Most Street

After a terrible fire in 1812, when almost all the wooden buildings of Moscow burned down, the Kuznetsk Bridge remained unscathed. However, a few years later, Neglinka was enclosed in an underground canal, and the stone bridge was covered with earth as unnecessary. Its parapets served as the basis for the construction of new buildings. At the same time, many merchant shops, shops and other commercial establishments were built on both sides of the bridge. Since that time, the status of the main shopping street in Moscow has been assigned to Kuznetsky Most.

Geographic location of the street

Located inside the Boulevard Ring, Kuznetsky Most Street begins at Bolshaya Dmitrovka in the area of Kamergersky Lane and ends at Bolshaya Lubyanka at the intersection with Furkasovsky Lane. Its length is only 790 meters. At the same time, the bridge that gave the name of the street is located between two streets: Petrovka and Neglinnaya. During earthworks, it was dug out several times, but in the end it was mothballed, restoring the roadbed over it.

Sights of Kuznetsky Most

Despite several lost architectural monuments, during the Great Patriotic War, there are many unique sights in the area of Kuznetsky Most Street:

  • A.S. Khomyakov;
  • the building of the merchants-patrons of the Tretyakov brothers;
  • city estate of the Myasoyedovs;
  • passage by K.S. Popova;
  • the historical building of the G.G. Solodovnikova.

During the improvement and major reconstruction in 2015, the street became a pedestrian street. Bicycle paths, lanterns, comfortable benches, flower beds appeared on it. From a shopping street, it has acquired the status of a public recreation area with a large selection of entertainment and cafes.

Fountain Friendship of Peoples https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/fontan-druzhba-narodov

Fountain Friendship of Peoples

Fountain Friendship of Peoples

One of the most recognizable sights of VDNKh – Fountain «Friendship of Peoples». The building was built in 1954 for the post-war opening of the exhibition, designed by architects Topuridze and Konstantinovsky. At that time, a children's cafe and small trade pavilions worked here. The name was changed several times during construction. Initially, they decided to call it the "Main Fountain", soon the name was changed to the "Golden Sheaf", but even it did not suit a number of high-ranking officials. In the final version, the fountain became known as "Friendship of Peoples".

There are 16 female sculptures around the fountain. Each of them is dedicated to the Union Republic, which was part of the USSR. At that time, the Soviet Union also included the Karelian-Finnish Republic, which two years later received autonomy and was annexed to the RSFSR, and the usual number of republics remained in the country – 15. The principle of the location of sculptures – by population.

History has not preserved the names of all the models from which the sculptures were made. It is known that well-known pianists, ballerinas, including the wife of the poet Mikhail Svetlov, were involved as prototypes of the republics of the USSR.

"Friendship of Peoples" built in the shape of an octagon. The water surface has an area of over 4000 m2. The water from the fountain can rise to a height of almost 20 meters. A large copper sheaf was erected in the center of the structure. His goal – symbolize the successful development of agriculture in the Soviet state: at the time of construction, the exhibition complex itself was called the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition. Below is a pumping station that provides eight hundred jets of water in various modes.

The building was built in the spirit of classicism and evokes associations with the fountains of Peterhof. Despite this, some critics believed that it lacked majesty, and the sculptures were too monotonous and lacked national features.

By the end of the 90s of the last century, the state of the fountain, which had been working for a long time without careful maintenance, fell into decay. Subsequently, water leaks appeared, and, despite the repairs, the complex had to be mothballed in 2009. The first restoration in the history of the fountain began at the end of 2018, and by May of the following year, simultaneously with the start of the Moscow fountain season, the building became available to visitors.

Armenian temple complex https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/armyanskiy-khramovyy-kompleks

Armenian temple complex

Armenian temple complex

The Armenian temple complex is a fairly large attraction of the capital. Due to the fact that the cultures of Russia and Armenia are tightly connected with each other, respectively, and religions have a certain relationship. And the first churches for Armenians began to appear in the capital almost 220 years ago.

Armenian religion

Most Armenians are Orthodox, but there are those who are Catholics. If you delve into history, then Armenia is the first country that adopted Christianity and made it the state religion. According to statistics, 95% of Armenians belong to the One Holy Ecumenical Apostolic Orthodox Armenian Church. The remaining 5% belong to Eastern Orthodoxy, Protestantism, Islam, Judaism, etc.

Armenian temple complex

The ensemble of temples was built over 13 years. Construction ended only in 2010. The complex includes:

  • Chapel of the Holy Christ
  • Cathedral
  • Residence of the Catholicos
  • Administration complex
  • Church school
  • Museums

This place is always popular not only among the natives of the capital, but also among tourists and travelers. After all, it is the largest Armenian temple complex, which is located outside of Armenia. He always amazes everyone with his scale.

Interesting facts

It is surprising that the Cathedral is about 58 m high. It is the highest Armenian temple in the world. There are about 27 crosses along the entire facade.

Soon the complex will include a church, which is currently under construction. It will be located on Poklonnaya Hill, where the memory of the fallen soldiers in the Great Patriotic War is honored. The church is called Srbot Naatakats, which means the Church of the Holy Great Martyrs. Many assume that it will be built in honor of the Armenian soldiers who gave their lives for the good of the world.

Despite the fact that the majority of Armenians profess Orthodoxy, there are churches in Moscow for Armenians that adhere to Catholicism. There are few such places, but according to statistics, there are about 200,000 people who want to visit the Armenian Catholic Church.

The very first Armenian church appeared in Moscow immediately after the war with Napoleon. After this event, the construction of the city began, and it was then that money was allocated for the construction of the temple.
It is also interesting that basically the entire complex was built with the help of charitable money from ordinary citizens.

School of watercolor by Sergey Andriyaka https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/shkola-akvareli-sergeya-andriyaki

School of watercolor by Sergey Andriyaka

School of watercolor by Sergey Andriyaka

An old red-brick mansion is comfortably located in the center of Moscow. The building was built in 1889 by architect Maxim Karlovich Geppener for an orphanage. And after reconstruction in 1999, it was transferred to the Moscow State Specialized School of Watercolor by Sergey Andriyaka.

The school of watercolors has something to surprise guests in addition to its appearance. Everything inside says that this is a real abode of art. Carved spiral staircase, columns and, of course, the work of students and teachers, hung on the walls. The feeling of being in an art gallery here begins already from the corridors.

The art director of the school Sergey Andriyaka believes that everyone can learn painting, regardless of age and natural talents. The peculiarity of his training lies in the author's method – the participant's work on the plot in parallel with the teacher. Everyone here has the opportunity to get the basics of art education. And to feel like an artist, it is not necessary to enroll in a full course. It is enough to come to a trial lesson or an excursion with a drawing lesson.

But this place is interesting not only because of the unique artistic program. At the Sergey Andriyaka School of Watercolors you can visit:

  • exhibition hall of maestro Andriyaka's works;
  • exhibitions of prominent artists;
  • vocal and instrumental concerts;
  • tours of the halls and educational buildings;
  • master classes.

Those who prefer to get acquainted with the complex on their own have the opportunity to take an audio guide and listen to the biography of the founder of the academy, the history of the school and the presented exhibits.

There is a cozy cafe on the territory of the complex where you can have a cup of coffee between visits to the exhibition halls. Guests who prefer not only to admire art, but also to participate in its creation, will benefit from the Art Salon. Here you can buy all the necessary materials: paper, brushes, pencils and watercolors from the best manufacturers. Salon employees will advise and help to choose the goods for those who have just decided to master the basics of painting.

The Sergey Andriyaka Watercolor School and the Museum and Exhibition Complex are dedicated to the fine art of watercolor painting and cultural programs. Thematic exhibitions here are constantly changing. It makes sense to follow the posters and visit this place from time to time.

Museum of Folk Toy Zabavushka https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/muzey-narodnoy-igrushki-zabavushka

Museum of Folk Toy Zabavushka

Museum of Folk Toy Zabavushka

In the east of Moscow, in Preobrazhensky, there is an unusual museum of the folk toy Zabavushka. In his collection there are several thousand toys of past and present masters. Children can not only touch the exhibits, but also play with them. Guides talk about the traditions of games, the peculiarities of peasant life and conduct master classes.

How Zabavushka appeared

The history of the museum begins in 1998. Its founders Sankin Aleksey Vyacheslavovich and Galenko Elena Gennadievna carried out a charity event — exhibition of Russian folk toys. Even then, the idea of an interactive format arose. Children played with the exhibits, learned their history and completed creative tasks.

Then everyone could not visit the exhibition, and it was extended on a paid basis. The future creators of the museum founded the "Tradition" society, and became the organizers of a regular exhibition of folk toys. In 2002 they opened the Zabavushka Museum.

What to see

The museum's collection contains approximately 9,000 exhibits, which are growing every year. There are so many of them that only a third of the total number was placed in the halls. But among the presented products there is something to see:

• Old toys of traditional folk crafts: Dymkovo, Filimonovo, Gorodets, Kargopol and others.
x Toys of modern masters who continue the traditions of the peoples of Russia. Clay, straw, wooden and rag products are presented.
x Peasant household items: jewelry, kitchen utensils, craft tools.
x Elements of women's national costumes: winter and summer outfits from different eras.
x Toys and dolls from other countries.

Excursion programs

Interactive excursions for children are conducted by teachers and psychologists. Despite the children's focus, the programs are interesting for teenagers, students, and even adults. You can sign up for one of the group tours:

  • Clay folk toy. History and method of making clay toys.
  • Toy crafts in Russia. A story about the traditions of crafts of folk toys in different cities.
  • Patchwork doll. The meaning of rag dolls in the life of our ancestors and the creation of your own doll.
  • Teach us toys. Participation in folk games and acquaintance with toys from different countries.
  • Shrovetide. Thematic annual program with master classes and pancake treats.

At the end of the excursions, children receive a traditional clay whistle as a gift and paint it themselves.

A joint trip to the museum of folk toys Zabavushka — an interesting and useful way to spend leisure time for children and their parents.

Pinball Museum GoPinball https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/muzey-pinbola

Pinball Museum GoPinball

Pinball Museum GoPinball

Together with the advent and development of computer technology, the era of the popularity of slot machines, which ended several decades ago, has gone. However, mechanical slot machines still attract fans of retro things and those who want to feel nostalgia for their youth, when such machines were at every turn. For those who appreciate this kind of vintage, there is a pinball museum in the capital.

Pinball itself is just one type of analog slot machine, the point of which is to score as many points as possible by manipulating several metal balls on the playing field.

However, enthusiasts not only in Moscow, but all over the world collect and bring back to life any old slot machines (the largest museum is located in Hungary). However, the GoPinball project stands out from their background. It is based on a private collection, originating as a hobby of a museum owner who wanted to put one slot machine in his office a few years ago.

The history of the collection dates back to 2015. The constantly expanding exposition currently includes 50 devices produced between 1934 and 2021 from all manufacturers that were on the market.

The museum preserves and repairs old pinball machines, which are real mechanical marvels of technology – inside the case of each of them are placed hundreds of incandescent lamps, wires, and even the ancestor of today's computers. In addition, the museum conducts informative tours, seeking to expand the understanding of these cultural objects, telling about their history, how they work and how they differ from modern devices.

It's also worth mentioning that all exhibits are in perfect working order and available for use, so visitors can always try their hand at old, classic arcade games.

The museum has changed several sites. Previously, it was located in Sokolniki Park, and at the moment it is located next to the Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure under the Krymsky Bridge (the nearest metro stations are Park Kultury and Oktyabrskaya).

The cost of a ticket for one person varies from 450 to 650 rubles. There is also a café-bar on the premises. It is possible to coordinate with the museum the holding of events on its territory by booking both part of the hall and its entirety. It is also possible to rent the machines themselves, which employees will deliver to the planned site.

Upside down house https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/dom-perevertysh

Upside down house

Upside down house

At first glance, this is the most ordinary house. That's just it does not stand on the foundation, but on the roof — hence the name "shifter" came from. A small car is parked upside down next to the porch, and a bicycle is hung upside down on the other side. You won’t be able to ride it, just like a car, but anyone who has purchased a ticket can go inside the house.

What to see?

Because the house literally stands on its head, everything inside is turned upside down too. This can make your head spin — for those who have a weak vestibular apparatus, it is better to refuse to visit this location or take sour candies with you.

The adventure begins immediately — to get into the house, you need to step  through the door trim. However, there are no thresholds familiar to everyone in any of the rooms. And there are a lot of rooms — almost like in an average small cottage. On two floors there is a nursery, a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a combined bathroom — all of them are furnished in European style and are available for visiting.

Each room has furniture. True, no one managed to sit on it, because it is securely screwed to the floor, which is located above the visitors' heads. But electric lamps get confused underfoot.

By the way, all the decoration of the house is real, not fake. Plates, cups and pots — exactly the same as everyone in the kitchen. Sofas and tables — real size. And the food in the refrigerator is quite suitable for preparing dinner. An important point — there are no dangerous items in the house, so not only adults, but also small children can come here.

What to do?

Everything inside the house can be touched. Main — do not try to break it off and take it with you as a souvenir. Employees monitor the safety of furniture and decor with the help of cameras.

There is not much to do in the upside-down house — except to walk around the rooms and look at them. Actually, this is the essence of the attraction — due to the fact that all things are located differently than a person is used to, the brain experiences unusual sensations. If desired, you can arrange a photo session — There are plenty of places where you can catch funny shots, and the time you stay inside is not limited.

By the way, this house changes its location from time to time, so before you go on an adventure, you should check its current address on online maps. You don't need to buy tickets in advance — they are sold at the box office at the entrance.

Moscow Perfume Museum https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/moskovskiy-muzey-parfyumerii

Moscow Perfume Museum

Moscow Perfume Museum

The collection of the Moscow Perfume Museum contains the best antique and vintage perfumes from legendary perfume houses. The exposition tells the history of the development of perfumery. Museum visitors can get acquainted with the basic rules of perfumery and learn the history of the creation of famous perfumes from the past.

History of the museum

The museum was created on the initiative of patron Timur Saratov. This idea came to him after studying perfume museums operating in Europe. The collection is based on vintage and antique perfumes, which were kept in the family of Timur Saratov. The private collection determined the further development of the idea: a demonstration of vintage fragrances.

The museum opened its doors to visitors in 2013. The first exposition featured 1,500 fragrances. The collection at that time consisted of 60,000 exhibits. Patrons from all over the world took part in the formation of the permanent collection.

In 2014, the museum changed its format in favor of interactivity. Tours-tastings began to be held for visitors, where you can take genuine bottles in your hands and inhale the aromas. Later, a perfume shop was opened on the basis of the museum. Bottles that do not represent a museum value get on sale.

Perfume tasting

On a sightseeing day, the museum accepts up to 80 guests. Tastings are held for organized groups of up to 10 people. The event lasts 1 hour. During this time, visitors get acquainted with 25 of the best antique and vintage perfumes.

During the tour, visitors are treated to coffee or mineral water. Drinking liquids helps to clear the olfactory receptors, so the sensations of inhaling aromas do not mix. Vintage perfumes have a specific composition, so about 20% of visitors perceive aromas as harsh and unpleasant.

Original fragrances are offered for review, not modern copies. All bottles offered for tasting have at least 18 duplicates in storage. Bottles with a smaller number of copies can be viewed through the glass of the display case.

Interesting facts

Spirits are being rotated in the museum. The bottle is on tasting no more than 3 weeks. After the expiration date, the bottle is sent to the museum storage, and one of its duplicates is brought to the exhibition hall.

Optimal temperature is maintained in the storage: +15-18°C. Infrared light helps to preserve aromas. The bottle from the showroom is stored for at least 1 year before being taken back for tasting.

Twice a year, visitors can see the fountain filled with vintage perfumes. This event is held in the spring of the International Museum Day and in the fall on the Day of the City of Moscow.

Location

The Moscow Perfume Museum is located at Arbat, 36/2.

Operating mode

Now the museum is closed, tickets for excursions are not sold.

Accordion is a specialty of the Russian people, a true friend and eternal companion. This is one of the most beloved musical instruments in Russia. You can look at the smallest accordion, button accordions and monophones, accordions in the only Alfred Mirek Harmonica Museum in the country.

History of the Harmonica Museum

The impetus for the emergence of a unique museum was Alfred Martinovich's passion for playing the accordion in 1947. As a true researcher, he was interested in the history and origin of the musical instrument. There were no scientific works and systematic knowledge at that time.

Mirek began to travel around the provinces and record the oral retellings of the inhabitants, collect audio recordings, photographs. However, the uniqueness of his work lay in the fact that he supplemented his collection with rare musical instruments. One of the first exhibits was a harmonica, concertina, talyanka, button accordion. Over time, the collection grew larger, constantly replenished with new artifacts.

Initially, the collected exhibits were exhibited at Mirek's dacha in the village of Sofrino. It was here that he first presented his unique exposition to the audience. Many liked the collection, and in 1977 it was included in the Register of the International Committee of UNESCO Museums.

In 1996, a separate room was allocated for the exposition in the center of Moscow. In gratitude for this, Mirek donated his unique collection to the capital in 1998.

Exposition of the unique harmonica museum

The exhibits are located in 4 thematic halls. Hall 1 tells the story of the origin of the first harmonica, visitors will see the process of its improvement up to new modern models. Here you can also read about the first musical masters who created their masterpieces by hand, putting a piece of their soul into each one.

Rare varieties of accordions and button accordions are presented in the 2nd hall. There are materials, photographs, audio recordings that tell about the role of music during the Great Patriotic War.

The biography of Alfred Mirek is described in the 3rd room. It also contains all the materials that tell about the history of the creation of the museum.

Rare representatives of foreign reed instruments are exhibited in the 4th hall. Visitors can see Finnish, Tyrolean, Styrian harmonicas.

The museum offers several excursion programs that will be of interest to everyone, without exception, from young to old. There are sightseeing, thematic, costumed excursions, calendar holidays, family ones. Each of them ends with a traditional tea party to the sounds of an accordion.

Moscow State Museum: Burganov House

Moscow State Museum: Burganov House

In 2001, the workshop of the famous Russian sculptor A.N. Burganova has turned into an amazing tourist destination. The Moscow State Museum was opened with a more capacious name Burganov's House. After 20 years, the exposition has changed significantly, and every year more and more admirers of surrealism, contemporary art, as well as the work of an incredible sculptor come here. The works of A.N. Burganov can be seen on the squares and streets of Europe, Asia and America. They are amazing in their simplicity, versatility and meanings that the author is trying to convey through mastery of technology.

Why is it worth visiting the Burganov House in Moscow?

The Burganov's House Museum is located in the capital of Russia on Bolshoy Afanasevsky Lane in building number 15, building 9. When creating this museum space, it was decided to combine open and closed areas, underground rooms to house various expositions. In addition to sculptures, you should definitely pay attention to temporary exhibitions dedicated to various areas of art. TOP 3 reasons to come to the Burganov House in Moscow:

  • Amazing museum space (LOFT-style design, lack of strict rules and requirements for behavior in other similar tourist places);
  • Introduction to the works of the great Russian sculptor A.N. Burganov (his work greatly influenced the development of architecture and contemporary art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries);
  • The expositions present not only sculptures by A.N. Burganov, but also works from his personal collection – from ancient art, Russian medieval sculpture to folk art (as well as unique books, engravings).

In the Moscow State Museum Burganov's House you can freely get acquainted with different areas of art. Master classes and lectures are often held here, for example, one of the latest – this is the creation of an animated film (both adults and children will like this pastime). The main direction in the work of the sculptor – it's surreal. And it is worth noting that, apart from the well-known Salvador Dali, it is difficult to remember the artists who create works in this style. And to appreciate how surrealism becomes the embodiment of actual reality and taking into account Russian trends is possible only in the House of Burganov.

Museum-estate of F. I. Chaliapin

Museum-estate of the outstanding Russian singer F.I. Chaliapin is located on Novinsky Boulevard. It was his first home, and a special homely atmosphere reigned in it. The estate has existed as a museum since the distant 1988. The first wife of Fyodor Chaliapin, Iola Tornagi, contributed to its discovery.

European-style manor

It is interesting that the period of life in this house coincided with the heyday of the singer's talent and his worldwide fame. The estate was bought in 1910, when the artist was 37 years old. His wife, Iola Tornaghi, took over the repair, rebuilding the house in a European way. With her light hand, running water, gas, a bathroom and even a telephone appeared in the house, a rarity at that time. A gazebo with a picturesque view of the Moscow River was installed in the garden, an alley of lindens, jasmine and lilac bushes was planted.

A unique collection of paintings

Painting lovers will be able to get acquainted with a unique collection of paintings presented to Chaliapin by such famous artists as V. Serov, K. Korovin, V. Polenov, M. Nesterov, M. Vrubel. The singer's son Boris Chaliapin also contributed to the family museum – handed over a collection of his own works.

Interior

The interior of the house-museum was restored from photographs and memories of the artist's children. In the White Hall, Chaliapin arranged concert rehearsals, in the dining room he celebrated benefit performances with his guests, in his office he liked to read and draw up plans for creative projects.

The museum has collected many things of the Chaliapin family, including expensive pieces of furniture, a Bechstein piano, grandfather clocks, wedding candles, costumes from performances, posters of theatrical performances.

Who was a frequent guest of the house-estate

During his lifetime, famous representatives of Russian culture often visited Chaliapin's estate. These were composers S. Rachmaninov and L. Sobinov, writers M. Gorky and I. Bunin, artist K. Korovin, director K. Stanislavsky.

Present

Now the Chaliapin estate is open to guests and tourists from other countries. Tours, exhibitions of paintings and rare items await visitors. Concerts are held on the estate, where young, but already well-known performers perform, creative meetings and children's parties.

Those who truly value the artist's work often come here: musicians, artists, vocalists, actors.

Museum of nomadic culture https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/muzey-kochevoy-kultury

Museum of nomadic culture

Museum of nomadic culture

The Museum of Nomadic Culture in Moscow is one of the interactive museums that are now gaining well-deserved popularity. Here, visitors not only passively get acquainted with the exhibits, they are actively involved in the process.  And the combination of theory and practice has always been better absorbed and much more interesting.

History of the creation of the exposition

The museum was created by a geography teacher, traveler and writer Konstantin Kuksin  and is located on the territory of an ordinary Moscow school No. 1321, where he taught. This happened after his three-month trip to Mongolia and life in the camp of nomads. Emotions so overwhelmed Konstantin that he wanted to share them with the rest and organized a museum on the territory of his school: especially since he brought a Mongolian yurt with him. She was installed here.

Kuksin developed the concept and assembled a team of like-minded people: they equipped the yurt with simple belongings and began to organize excursions, which suddenly became popular. The team gradually grew, and the museum began to expand: new exhibits are brought to remote corners of our planet from annual ethnographic expeditions.

Museum exposition

During such travels, scientists actively participate in the fate of nomadic peoples: they live together with them, study customs, mores, way of life and habits. The main goal of any expedition is the acquisition and placement of a national dwelling in which an authentic interior is reproduced. Now on the territory of the school there are 20 national dwellings of 14 nomadic peoples: yarangas, wagons, tips, even a khan's yurt and much more.

After installation, an interactive tour program is developed. Its essence is simple: visitors, as it were, come to visit a family of nomads and begin to get to know them. All exhibits and utensils are authentic: you can use them - try on national clothes, listen to the sounds of a real shaman tambourine, lie down on deer skins, try tea with milk in a Mongolian yurt. And learn about the rules of behavior in some dwellings that differ from the usual ones: girls - to the right, boys - to the left. You can't often enter someone else's half.

And most importantly - enjoy the unusual interior, breathe in the smells of smoke, admire the colors of the carpets: and all this - in the natural twilight. And where else can you see the Khan's yurt from the inside? And hardly anyone will be able to visit an Indian tipi.

A 2-hour tour is led by guides who have personally been on expeditions. For authenticity, everyone is dressed in national costumes. The process is surprisingly interesting and exciting. After some excursions, there is an opportunity to shoot from a bow: and no one will refuse this either. And, of course, buy the most interesting books by Konstantin Kuksin: they are distinguished by a good style and excellent presentation of the material.

More about excursions

The museum is located near the Aviamotornaya metro station: st. Aviamotornaya, 30, building A. Visitors are offered three types of programs: ethnographic and historical interactive excursions and religious lectures. Registration - by the specified phone number.

Everything is interesting, active and creative. And definitely worth a try!

Chambers of the Romanov boyars - the oldest place in Moscow https://ruroom.net/en/articles/moscow_sights/galaty-boyar-romanovykh

Chambers of the Romanov boyars - the oldest place in Moscow

Chambers of the Romanov boyars - the oldest place in Moscow

In the very center of Moscow, between the Zaryadye park and Varvarka for more than 500 years there are white-stone chambers of the Romanov boyars – future dynasty. It was there that Mikhail Romanov was born at the end of the 16th century. Muscovites and guests of the capital have the opportunity to plunge into history for a small fee, see the birthplace of the future tsar, and get acquainted with the life of that time.

History of the place

Presumably, Khovrina merchants chose this place back in the 15th century. Then the Romanov boyars settled here.

At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Boris Godunov reigned on the throne, who subjected the Romanovs to persecution. The father of the future tsar, Fyodor Romanov, was exiled to a monastery and trimmed as a monk. In history, he became more famous under the name Filaret.

In 1626, a fire severely damaged the chambers. Immediately, Tsar Michael began to restore his family nest, already living in the Kremlin. The descendants of the royal council gave the chambers to the estate of the Znamensky Monastery. The building was rebuilt several times, and in the middle of the 19th century it became one of the first domestic museums – "House of the boyars of the Romanovs". The upper floor was reconstructed, the front porch was completed, and the interior was richly decorated.

What's interesting

Unfortunately, the original appearance of the building itself has not been completely preserved, but the white stone basement on which it stands was built in the 16th century.

For an hour of excursion around this place, you can get acquainted with the life of the Moscow boyars of the 17th century. The museum presents residential and commercial interiors of that time. Here are authentic furniture, household items, clothes, utensils, books, fabrics, etc. In Russia, there is no longer a museum that could immerse visitors in such detail into the atmosphere of boyar life five hundred centuries ago.

The wards are divided into male and female halves. On the first floor there are the interiors of the refectory, where guests were received, feasts and dinners were arranged, a library, a boyar's study and a room for the eldest sons.

The second floor is reserved for women. Visitors first enter the canopy – passage room. From it you can get into the room of the noblewoman – housewives. The room is isolated from the rest, because women from the upper classes of that time preferred a secluded lifestyle. Also on the second floor there is a light room – a workshop in which women were engaged in needlework.

Visitors of the museum can go down to the basement of the end of the 15th century. Thick walls are almost completely preserved from that time.

Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center

Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center

In November 2012, a museum dedicated to the culture and history of Jews, as well as their unusual traditions, was opened in the capital of Russia. This place is located in Maryina Roshcha in Moscow. An important advantage of the Jewish Museum is the permanent exhibition, which includes hundreds of interesting exhibits. Some researchers also call this place the most technologically advanced museum in Russia. A lot of information about the resettlement of Jews is presented in an interactive form (photos, audio and video materials are used). Such a study of history will certainly appeal to children, adolescents and adults. Here are five main reasons to visit this tourist destination.

TOP 5 reasons to visit the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center

The exposition of this unique museum is divided into several thematic sections. Documents, artifacts, letters and literary works of art that tell about the life of the Jewish people, the complexities and traditions. It will be especially interesting for children to see the T-34 tank, the U-2 aircraft and visit temporary exhibitions (they often show videos about the great representatives of the Jews).

Why the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center is the most modern tourist destination in the Russian capital:

  • At the beginning of the exposition, visitors are offered to watch a 4D film (about the creation of the world, the emergence of different religions, the formation of the Jewish diaspora);
  • The museum has an incredible migration map on an interactive table – a story about the history of the resettlement of Jews;
  • A catchy shtetl – this is a specially recreated territory of Tsarist Russia, where you can see how people of that time lived (in squat houses, with a market space, a synagogue and a religious school);
  • Atmosphere of an Odessa cafe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (you can study the customs, traditions, culture of Jews on sensory platforms);
  • A detailed story about the revolutionary events, the Civil War and the participation of the Jewish people in it, as well as how the Jews influenced the formation of the Soviet Union (chronicle footage, real photos and interviews with veterans).

The memorial in memory of those who died during the Holocaust and World War II deserves special attention. Having visited the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center at least once, you will forever appreciate the exploits, history and culture of the Jewish people in all its diversity.
