Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon

Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon

Tsar Bell

The Tsar Bell is without a doubt the heart of our country. In 1730, Empress Anna Ioannovna decided to leave a cultural monument as a legacy after her reign. For this, according to the idea of the empress, the broken bell of Grigoriev was used, a new, largest bell, now called the "Tsar Bell", was merged from it.

There were several smaller versions before its inception. These are the Godunovsky bell and the Grigoryevsky bell, created in the 16-17th century. There is a main difference between the monument and the previous versions. Both the Godunovsky and Grigorievsky bells were working, while the Tsar bell never worked.

The reason for the creation of the monument was the desire of the Empress to create and leave behind something significant, while not contradicting the decision of the politics of the 18th century. The search for craftsmen ready to take the order to work began. Many of them refused, because they considered the idea to be a joke and did not take the empress's idea seriously. The Russian craftsmen Motorin Ivan Fedorovich and his son got down to business. It took 3 years to approve the project and search for the necessary work. A monument was cast in the Kremlin. In a 10-meter pit, a bell was cast in a special form. The object turned out to be 202 tons in weight and 6.24 m in height.

Tsar Cannon

The Tsar Cannon is another exhibit that attracts the attention of visitors to the Moscow Kremlin. Like the Tsar Bell, it is a monument of foundry art. Its creator, Andrei Chokhov, worked for 40 years at the Moscow cannon yard. The weight of the monument is 34 tons. The cannon was cast during the reign of Fyodor Ivanovich, son of Ivan the Terrible, in 1586. The image of a king sitting on a horse has been preserved on the Tsar Cannon, hence the name of the monument.

In order to understand whether the Tsar Cannon had technical significance, 2 studies were conducted. Both in 1980 by Dzerzhinsky specialists and engineer Zakharikov. The conclusions of the two studies agreed that the cannon never fired. There were traces of burnt earth inside the barrel, which indicates that the gun was not cleaned. The second important point is that the gun does not have an ignition hole, so it is impossible to fire a shot. At the moment, several questions remain uncovered for the siege of what the Tsar Cannon was cast and what they were going to destroy with it. The Tsar Cannon is currently a full-fledged weapon capable of breaking through the walls of fortresses with stone cannonballs. Everything can be changed only by the presence of an ignition hole and the gun will come into action.
