The Moscow Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is located at the intersection of Red Square with Nikolskaya Street. This is an ancient Orthodox shrine, which is of great importance for believers around the world. The small cathedral is famous for its amazing beauty and is one of the most visited. It is open to believers daily, from 8.00 to 18.30. Times of worship – 8.30 and 16.50.

History of the shrine

Date of foundation of the cathedral – 1625. The temple was built on the initiative of the great commander Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky. Its construction symbolized the victory of the Russian people in the Battle of Moscow in 1612

The cathedral became the place of storage of the famous Kazan icon of the Mother of God, in front of which the soldiers of Russia have long prayed. In 1647, a chapel of St. Barsanuphius and Guria. In the 19th century a new tier was added to the bell tower, and the temple facades were transformed in classical traditions.

In the 30s. the past century, the shrine was destroyed to the ground. Instead, the Soviet authorities equipped a place to relax with a pavilion and a fountain. The cathedral was revived only a few decades later. Restoration work began in 1990. It took three years to completely recreate the temple. 

Thanks to the availability of photographs and drawings of the original version, the cathedral was brought as close as possible to the original. Samples of the previous wall paintings have not been preserved, so the temple was painted in the tradition of the 19th century.

View from outside and inside

The Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is a one-pillar religious building. Special Features:

  • many kokoshniks lined outside in rows, giving the building an original and picturesque look;
  • the presence of a neat hipped bell tower in the northwestern corner;
  • the presence in the northeastern part of the chapel of St. Averky of Hierapolis.

The interior of the cathedral is incredibly beautiful. In the temple there is the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, especially revered by Orthodox Christians, and the keeper of the relics.

How to get to the cathedral

As in ancient times, today the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is the leading symbol of the liberation of Moscow from foreign invaders. The temple is located in a conspicuous place – near the northeast corner of Red Square. GUM and the State Historical Museum are located next to it. The shrine can be quickly reached on foot from the stations "Revolution Square"; and «Teatralnaya».
