Monument to Prince Vladimir: a new landmark of Moscow

Monument to Prince Vladimir: a new landmark of Moscow

Not all sights of the capital were created in the Middle Ages  and a little later. The cultural image of Moscow is constantly changing, monuments associated with their events appear in memorable places, one of which is the monument to Prince Vladimir, recently built on Borovitskaya Square. It is rightfully considered one of the highest monuments of the capital and is well visible from different parts of the city.

Time of occurrence

The monument to Prince Vladimir was erected on Borovitskaya Square in 2016. It is one of the largest in Russia. The idea of its creation belonged to the Russian Military Historical Society. The initiative to create a monument to the prince who baptized Russia was also supported by the Russian Orthodox Church. The Moscow City Hall noted that there are practically no references to this ruler of Russia on the streets of the capital.

History of Creation

Prince Vladimir ruled Ancient Russia. He was glorified by great victories, a serious contribution to the development of the state. Despite the fact that he was a great figure, distinguished by cruelty and deceit, it was he who gave the inhabitants of Russia Orthodoxy. The prince himself also changed his way of life, becoming a Christian. He regularly participated in prayers, began to help the poor.

Despite the fact that Prince Vladimir went down in history as the baptizer of Russia, the idea of erecting a monument in his honor caused a number of controversies. The general public, as well as well-known politicians, historians, architects and Moscow experts took part in them.

Initially, it was planned to erect a monument twenty-four meters high. But this caused fear that the beautiful panorama with views of the tall building of Moscow State University would be spoiled in this way.  At the same time, it was also taken into account that it was planned to place the monument on the edge of the observation deck, and making it so high was simply unsafe.< /p>

The place where the monument will be erected was chosen by the townspeople. It was a unique experiment, when the fate of such a majestic landmark was decided by voting. The public was in favor of placing the monument on Borovitskaya Square.

The sculptors Shcherbakov and Voskresensky worked on the project. They took into account the features of the area and made the monument a few meters smaller. As a result, Borovitskaya Square was decorated with a twelve-meter monument.

Distinguishing Features

The monument to Prince Vladimir differs from other monuments in its height. It is 12 m, which in many ways exceeds other sculptures. This monument is one of the highest not only in the capital, but throughout Russia. Its pedestal is also interesting. The sculptors placed three bas-reliefs on it. One of them tells about the life of Vladimir before baptism, and the other two tell about the baptism of Russia and the prince himself.
