Moscow Drama Theater Pod Hand. Armen Dzhigarkhanyan

Moscow Drama Theater Pod Hand. Armen Dzhigarkhanyan

The history of the theater began at the end of the 20th century. Then it was called the Theater "D". At this time, on an acting course at the famous University of Cinematography. S. A. Gerasimov was taught by the popularly beloved artist Armen Borisovich Dzhigarkhanyan. The first actors of the new Moscow Drama Theater under the guidance of the great actor and director were the graduates of the course.

History of the theater

The repertory arsenal of the theater was quite diverse and offered the attention of the audience classical plays by Russian and foreign authors, original productions based on the works of contemporary writers. The opened theater immediately won success with the public, thanks to an impressive repertoire. Pushkin's "Little Tragedies", "Kazakin or Kamzol from Mascaril" were staged on the stage. Moliere, as well as Shakespeare, Beckett, Vampilov, children's performances were also sold out.

In 2021, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan's Progress Scene was merged with the Moscow Satire Theater. Today the establishment of Melpomene is known as the Moscow Drama Theater under the direction of A. B. Dzhigarkhanyan.

Repertoire of a cultural institution

In the repertoire of the theater, classical plays of Russian and foreign art alternate with the latest productions based on the works of contemporary writers. The troupe includes such talented actors as A. Annenkov, A. Kot, T. Mukhina, O. Kuzina, A. Kopylov.

The most famous performance of the theater is considered to be Balalaykin and Co. with Sergei Chonishvili in the title role. The play based on the novel by Saltykov-Shchedrin was written by Sergei Mikhalkov himself. Although for that time it was quite risky. The director was Sergei Gazarov. The merit of the fact that the performance was censored is attributed to the big name of Mikhalkov. The sarcastically well-aimed words of Saltykov-Shchedrin even then struck officials mercilessly.

Almost 50 years ago, the same performance was staged by Georgy Tovstonogov, People's Artist of the USSR. Sergei Gazarov played in the production. However, despite the common name, the performances are strikingly different, including the bold, non-standard design of the stage space.

Today the theater is directed by actor and director Sergei Ishkhanovich Gazarov. In his plans, some of which he has already implemented, is to introduce new ideas into the established traditions of the theater. Gazarov intends to assemble a team of people who will bring the theater to a new stage of development, but preserving the legacy of the founder – Armen Jigrakhanyan.
