Krutitsy Compound

Krutitsy Compound

Krutitsy Compound — the territory located in Moscow in the Tagansky district of the city of Moscow. The building was built in the 16th century and belongs to the historical architectural heritage and religious symbols of Russia. The name of the place is connected with the word «Krutitsy» — several centuries ago, this was the name given to the elevations on the steep left bank of the Moskva River. The exact location of this place — Proletarskaya metro station, Krutitskaya street, 4a.

This territory is associated with old Moscow and stands out against the background of the architecture familiar to us. The cobblestones were laid today, but the earthen roads and red brick buildings date back to ancient times. In the 17th century, solid stone construction began here. Almost everything that has survived to this day belongs to this time. The restoration of the architectural monument was established by Pyotr Dmitrievich Baranovsky in the Soviet years.

The territory consists of the following buildings that have survived to this day: the Small Assumption Cathedral, the Metropolitan's Chambers, the Krutitsy Teremok and the Resurrection Passages (through which the bishop moved from his place of residence to the service), the Church of the Resurrection of the Word on Krutitsy, the Corps of Metropolitan Orders, Embankment Chambers, wooden houses.

The Compound is a popular filming location. In ancient times, it was the residence of bishops. In the Small Assumption Cathedral in 1612, Minin and Pozharsky took an oath to liberate Moscow from the Poles. Richly decorated facades of buildings are located mainly inside the Metochion — At that time, they tried not to exhibit beauty and hid it from prying eyes, so there is no decor on the outside of the first buildings. However, 40 years later, during the construction of the Krutitsky Teremka, architectural pretentiousness was put on display. Inside the courtyard, the facade of Teremka looks modest.

In the 18th century, under Catherine II, all the buildings of the Compound were given to the military and used as barracks. Church property and archives of the diocese were moved to the Chudov Monastery, located in the Moscow Kremlin. In 1812, the Metochion suffered from a fire and was almost demolished, but Emperor Alexander I insisted that all buildings be preserved. Until the end of the 20th century, barracks were located on the territory and prisoners were kept from time to time. At present, the Krutitsy Compound is a historical monument, a place that tourists visit to touch the culture of old Moscow.
