History

The Bolshoi Theater is located in the very center of Moscow – on the square of the same name with a fountain and benches. It is noteworthy that the original building of the theater was laid back in 1776 by order of Catherine II, but was subsequently destroyed by fire several times. In 1824, according to the project of architects A.A. Mikhailova and O.I. Beauvais erected the building that we admire today. The appearance of the Bolshoi Theater with its eight monumental columns and the chariot of Apollo above the portico is familiar to everyone. And 200 years ago, and now this theater is rightfully considered one of the most luxurious in the world.

Interiors

The interior of the Bolshoi Theater is also made in the classical style. Dominant colors in the interior – red and gold. The five-tiered auditorium can accommodate 2153 people. It is decorated with gilded stucco, ceiling paintings and a huge cascading chandelier. Another important advantage of this hall – excellent acoustics.

Before the performance, it is worth taking a walk through the building itself and inspecting its magnificent foyers. The Exposition Hall presents stage costumes of world theater stars and old theater posters. The white foyer amazes with high windows with scarlet curtains, gilded lamps, grisaille ceiling paintings and snow-white vases with flowers. In the Grand Imperial Foyer you can see unique silk on the walls, and in the Small – make sure that the voice of a person standing clearly in the center of the hall sounds much louder than usual (such a trick was invented specifically for Emperor Nicholas II, who had a quiet voice and therefore did not like to speak in public).

Tickets and excursions

Performances at the Bolshoi Theater take place both on the historical stage, located in the main building, and on the new stage, built in 2002 and located across the street. Tickets are sold on the official website of the theater and at the box office. Contrary to popular belief, buying them is not at all difficult.
