VDNH: from creation to modern times

The abbreviation VDNH stands for exhibition of the achievements of the national economy. This is a unique architectural and park ensemble, which was built on a unique project and is the current exhibition center to this day. Time of creation

In 1935, the development of a marshland began, on the territory of which ponds, gardens and a flower nursery were located. In its place it was planned to organize a temporary exhibition. This was done by Oltarzhevsky, who was the main architect of the project. The exhibition of achievements of the national economy, located on the outskirts of Moscow, was planned to be solemnly opened on the day of the twentieth Revolution in 1937, but all the preparatory work was not completed on time, with the result that the main architect and several other people were repressed.

Foundation History

The opening of the exhibition took place two years later in 1939. The entrance to its territory was decorated with a large elegant metal arch, which can be seen today, if you go to the VVC through the northern entrance. The pre-war architectural ensemble of the VDNKh included several republican pavilions, an imitation of the Soviet countryside and cattle-breeding campus. The exhibition also housed gardens and exhibit crops. And still the residents and guests of the capital had access to a real recreation area with a pond.

After the war of 1941-1945, the territory of VDNH expanded considerably. This happened in 1954. The main entrance to the exhibition was transferred to the territory located near the Yaroslavl highway. On the extended territory, large-scale pavilions of the Republics of the Soviet Union at that time appeared, a real pear orchard, smoothly flowing into a pine forest. This time became the real dawn of VDNH, which at that time enjoyed unprecedented popularity in Russia and abroad.

Distinctive features

The main distinguishing feature of VDNH is the diversity and originality of the architectural ensemble. Each pavilion of the exhibition is unique and unique, but at the same time, together they constitute a harmonious whole.

The central figure of the Exhibition of National Economic Achievements is the fountain of “Friendship of Peoples”, which in 2007 was solemnly opened after a long restoration. Benches located around it are a favorite place for young people to relax.

VDNH today

Currently VDNH is one of the 50 largest exhibition centers in the world. The total area of ​​all the pavilions of the complex is 134 thousand square meters. There are many monuments on the territory of the VDNKh, including the famous monument “Worker and Kolkhoznitsa”. The exhibition complex is located in the Ostankino district of the North-East Administrative District of Moscow.
